John MacPhail played for Sunderland 153 times between 1987 and 1991 and was a stalwart of 2 promotions seasons. MacPhail scored a remarkable 16 goals from central defence as the club won the 3rd Division in 87-88.
Sadly John has been unwell since the turn of the year and his family are raising funds in order to adapt his home and enable him to leave hospital.
