This print celebrates that great day at Wembley - the culmination of a long season, and an unforgettable play-off campaign that ended with Tommy's winner in injury time and bedlam at one end of Wembley, across Wearside, and beyond. In over 35 years of supporting Sunderland I don't think I've known anything like it. The dramatic start of Patterson's miraculous save, and O'Nien's agony - to the despair of seeing Sheffield United go 2-nil up, the intervention of VAR that gave us hope, Mayenda's emphatic finish and then that goal...
I started work on this once I was back from London, and my hangover had worn off... that took a while, as did completing these illustrations - 16 in total, all hand drawn. (No AI was, or will ever be used in my work). I'm really pleased with how they have all turned out - all the key men are there, in various states of action, celebration and disbelief.
I hope it will provide a lasting reminder of a momentous moment in Sunderland's history.
